"A friend is Janus-faced: he looks to the past and the future. He is the child of all my foregoing hours, the prophet of those to come, and the harbinger of a greater friend.”
Ralph Waldo Emmerson
The Got-A-Head®? system as a whole will be represented in the game with an avatar known as Janus, after the Roman God, as he stands on the threshold between their gaming experience and the real world, helping the Learner to marry the two together. Janus is a Grandfatherly character, encouraging but not ultimately responsible for the Learner.
The Learner mainly encounters Janus when he acts as the gatekeeper to the
Got-A-Head®? game. When s/he first selects an adventure game to play, Janus sets the scene. When they enter the game at other times, Janus will remind them where they were and set the scene for the action coming up.
On leaving the game, Janus will summarise what they have learnt or practised and encourage them to come back soon.
Janus will also suggest resources in the Family Zone that might be of interest to the Learner given what they’ve been doing.
When the Learner completes an adventure, Janus will suggest what Got-A-Head®? adventure(s) s/he might like to do next
